Many of you are probably planning on having something to drink while you're at the residences. Here's a collection of things that people planning on organising events need to keep in mind about service of alcohol at the residences. Following these means that social events at the conference will be enjoyable (and trouble free) for all delegates.

Note that if you're unsure about anything, you should always confer with the conference organisers.

Containers

The University of Ballarat has determined that some containers of alcohol pose OH&S issues. So, please note the following:

  • Glass bottles may not be served outdoors. If you buy glass bottles, these must either be consumed indoors or poured into plastic containers indoors to be consumed whilst outside.
  • Plastic cups may be served outdoors.
  • Cans may be served outdoors.

General alcohol laws

Please note: None of the information below should be taken as legal advice. This list is not an exhaustive list of alcohol related laws, please use common sense.

Sale of Alcohol

Alcohol may not be sold by people without a liquor licence, even to cover costs.

This is especially relevant at events such as the UnPDNS.

Underaged drinking

In Victoria, alcohol may not be sold to a person who is under 18 years of age, and minors must not be on licensed premises (i.e. premises on which alcohol may be sold or consumed) unless accompanied by an adult.

It is now against Victorian law to serve alcohol in a private home to anyone under 18, unless their parents have given permission.

Driving

The Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) limit is 0.05% in Victoria, and learner/restricted drivers must have a zero BAC. It is also illegal to drive while impaired by any drug whether that drug is legal or illegal. These limits are strictly enforced and compulsory road side testing is common.
